A music box is a wonderful thing still, even with the Twenty-first Century’s access to MP3 files and iPods, etc. Especially if the cover of the mechanism is clear. Then you can see how the comb makes the sounds as directed by the pins on the rotating cylinder or disk. This form of music can be traced back to the automata that have been made off and on since Ancient Greece. Any time scientists of an era get interested in mechanical phenomena, clockwork toys soon followed, including the cuckoo clock and music boxes. Today’s music boxes just continue that tradition.

Today the number of tunes available in music boxes in phenomenal. Not only are old favorites still produced, new songs are produced in music boxes, including pop tunes and hits from Broadway musicals. If you have a favorite song, you may very well be able to find it in a music box. I was able to order a wooden box with the Virginia Military Institute’s march for my father, and I didn’t even know they had a march until I saw it in the list. So look around a bit and see if you can find a music box tune you’d like to have. Then the supplier can probably put it in a stuffed animal, box or figurine you want. If not, buy the music component and make your own carrier for it.

Sometimes you may find a music box in a souvenir, especially if the area has an iconic tune, like “New York, New York” or “I Left My Heart In San Francisco”. If so, you can bring someone special a special souvenir of your trip, or keep it for yourself. When the days get blue or tedious, crank up the music box and take a mini-vacation while the song plays. It won’t take much time and will brighten your day.
